Ahmedabad Airport
A quiet Thursday afternoon turned into a national tragedy when Air India Flight AI-171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. The aircraft was en route to London Gatwick, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members, when it went down in a fiery crash near the Meghani Nagar area, just beyond the airport’s northern boundary.

The crash occurred at 1:38 PM IST, barely a minute after takeoff. According to air traffic control records and preliminary reports, Captain Sumit Sabharwal, a senior Air India pilot with over 8,000 flight hours, issued a chilling “MAYDAY” call seconds before the aircraft lost altitude and plunged into the ground.
Smoke, Fire, and Panic
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud rumble, followed by a fireball erupting into the sky. It sounded like a bomb had gone off,” said Ravi Mehta, a local shopkeeper. “Then came the flames — high, dark, and terrifying.”
Flames consumed the aircraft within minutes, sending thick black smoke into the sky as stunned residents and airport staff rushed to the scene. Debris was scattered over a wide area. Nearby vehicles and small structures sustained damage. Several locals also suffered injuries while attempting to assist survivors.
One survivor, a middle-aged man who had been seated near the emergency exit, was pulled from the wreckage with serious burns. Through tears, he described chaos inside the cabin. “People were screaming. The lights went out. I don’t know how I made it out,” he said.
Emergency Response and Ongoing Rescue
The response from emergency teams was swift. Seven fire tenders, dozens of ambulances, and three units of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were dispatched immediately. Over 90 personnel were on-site within minutes, fighting fire and navigating the wreckage to save lives.
Hospitals across Ahmedabad were placed on high alert. Many of the injured were transported to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, SAL Hospital, and other emergency care units. Several are in critical condition.

Authorities have so far confirmed at least 30 fatalities, although that number may rise as recovery operations continue. Many passengers remain unaccounted for, and identification efforts are ongoing.
Aircraft and Pilot Details
The aircraft involved, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, was tail number VT-ANB, and had been in service for several years. Though widely considered a safe, long-range model, the Dreamliner series has faced scrutiny in the past due to electrical and engine issues.
Captain Sumit Sabharwal, the pilot in command, was highly experienced, and co-pilot Clive Kundar, with over 1,000 flight hours, was regarded as diligent and technically sound. The fact that they managed to issue a MAYDAY call before impact is a sign of their professional conduct during crisis.
Investigations Underway
Both the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) have launched a full investigation. The black box and cockpit voice recorder were recovered quickly and are expected to shed light on the sequence of events.
Experts suggest possible causes ranging from engine failure to technical malfunction or fuel imbalance, especially considering the heavy long-haul fuel load at takeoff. Investigators will analyze flight data, maintenance logs, and communication recordings to determine the cause of the crash.
A Nation in Mourning
Across the country, there is shock and sorrow. Social media has been flooded with messages of grief, prayers for survivors, and support for families. Outside the Ahmedabad airport, local residents gathered with candles to pay tribute to the victims.
Many onboard were students, working professionals, and families traveling to the UK for summer holidays, work opportunities, or reunions with loved ones. Their dreams were extinguished in moments, leaving families shattered.
